Part of having a successful church is making sure that the parishioners are safe. One of the best way to do that is to have regular inspections. While it’s always a good idea for pastors and others who spend a lot of time in the church to keep an eye on things, an official inspection by a qualified expert should be done at least twice a year. On a monthly basis, custodians should be given a checklist of items to check to make sure that everything is in good shape.

One big area of concern is the problem of fire hazards. These can include open flames, improperly stored combustibles and overloaded electrical sockets. Trip hazards are a major issue as well. It is important to go through the building and be aware of such issues as slippery steps, uneven tiles and torn carpets. Any hazards like these could send a person to the hospital if they are not taken care of promptly.

There are plenty of other issues to worry about as well. Inspectors will need to check the roof to ensure that the gutters are clear and that there is no damage to the structure itself. The nursery should be examined for anything that might present a danger to young children; electrical sockets without covers are a particular concern.

Playgrounds need to have safe equipment without exposed sharp edges, and any trees that are too close to the church or electrical wires need to be trimmed back. Finally, all cleaning supplies must be kept safely stored in a locked cabinet or closet and clearly labeled.

These are all basic components of a safe church. If you are serious about the protection of your parishioners, you should make sure that inspections happen at regular intervals and that those doing the inspections investigate these items.
